Business Course in Traditional & Modern Upholstery
Our business course is designed specifically to offer comprehensive training for you to start a career within the upholstery sector.
The course will provide you with an excellent level of practical skills and an understanding of the legal regulations and requirements of becoming a professional upholsterer.​
Your tutor will guide you through the techniques and methodologies used by masters of the trade.
The course runs continually through the year giving you the flexibility to choose your start date.
Limited to a maximum of 6 students, you will receive an excellent level of individual tuition and guidance.
Upon completion you will have a comprehensive skillset transferable to a range of furniture and soft furnishing projects for you to start your own business.

Business Course Information
The course duration is a minimum 8 weeks/40 days
Classes run from 9.30am-4.30pm
You are required to work on actual projects rather than sample frames.
This teaches you all aspects of the exercise and you will have projects for your portfolio of furniture to show future clients.
You will complete the following projects using traditional methods and materials:

Dining chair / footstool with a drop in / pop out seat pad

Overstuffed chair seat
-
Sprung chair seat
-
Nursing chair with a deep button back
-
Introduction to French polishing
You will complete the following projects using modern methods and materials:
-
Dining chair / footstool with a drop in / pop out seat pad

Deep buttoned footstool / headboard
-
Parker Knoll armchair
-
T shaped seat cushion
-
Single & double piping
-
In addition we encourage you to choose a final project of your own choice which may be a tub chair or a channel back chair.


Business Theory to Include:

Health & Safety in the workplace
-
UK's furniture & Furnishings (Fire)(Safety) Regulations 1988 relating to domestic furniture and furnishings
-
Martindale abrasion test
-
Correct use of tools and equipment, hand & mechanical tools
-
Upholstery Fillings & Materials
-
Cutting Plans & Pattern Matching
-
Understanding frame repairs

For the duration of the course each student is required to compile a record of their practical and theory work to include:

Health & Safety awareness
-
Description of processes
-
Sketches & or photographs of processes
-
Materials used for each process and suitability
-
Tools used for each process and suitability

This will be an invaluable record to refer back to after completion our the course.
The course must be completed within a 12 month period.
The Costs

​​​​The tuition cost for the course if completed within the 40 day timeframe is £2900.00 payable in instalments throughout the course.

In addition to your course fee, you will need to budget for the purchase of your projects to include; Furniture, Upholstery Tools, Upholstery Supplies & Fabric

Before embarking on the course you are required to book a taster day giving you the opportunity to meet fellow students already studying the business course and ensure MODE's style of teaching is a good fit for you.
